Building Online Insurance Management Before It Was a Thing
When we started building what would become InsuranceClouds, there wasn't a blueprint. Online insurance management systems were rare. Most agencies used desktop software installed on local machines. "The cloud" wasn't even a marketing term yet.
Michael and I were learning insurance at the same time we were developing the system. He knew the business - the workflows, the regulations, the carrier relationships, the way policies actually get written and serviced. I knew how to build software. Together, we were translating decades of industry practice into code.
It was an unusual partnership. I wasn't just a developer taking requirements - I was in the room (and on the phone) learning what it meant to bind a policy, what a certificate of insurance actually does, how renewals work, why carrier appointments matter. Every feature we built was informed by real agency operations, not theoretical workflows.
ATM Insurance became our testing ground. Every time Michael's team hit a friction point, we'd talk about it. "This takes too long." "We lose track of this." "Why can't we see this from one screen?" Each conversation became a feature request. Each feature made the system more valuable.
We were one of the first to offer a complete online insurance management system. Not just a portal for customers to download certificates. Not just a quoting tool. A full agency management system - policies, claims, commissions, carrier integrations, document management, reporting - all accessible through a web browser.
It was 2004. "Software as a service" was still a novel concept. Most agencies wouldn't touch anything that lived on someone else's server. But Michael saw the value. His agents could access the system from anywhere. Clients could submit requests online. Carriers could be integrated through APIs instead of fax machines.
We were building the future, and we were doing it with a small team, a direct relationship with an agency CEO, and a willingness to learn as we went.
